Petersham Nurseries: London's Most Beautiful Escape

There is a moment, somewhere between Richmond's riverside paths and the winding garden walk leading towards Petersham, when London seems to disappear entirely. The city gives way to birdsong, willow-lined riverbanks and quiet village streets where life unfolds at a gentler pace. It's difficult to believe that less than an hour earlier you're navigating the crowds of Soho or Covent Garden.

For travellers seeking a different side of London, Richmond delivers exactly that. Equal parts village, countryside and sophisticated dining destination, it offers one of the most rewarding escapes from the city centre. And at the heart of it all sits Petersham Nurseries; part garden, part restaurant, part lifestyle destination and entirely unforgettable.

First Stop: Richmond Village

Being dropped into the centre of Richmond feels worlds away from the pace of the city. Independent boutiques line the streets, locals linger outside cafes and the atmosphere is distinctly village-like. It's worth arriving with an appetite. Stop for a coffee and pastry before wandering through the historic streets, or settle into one of the many pubs and restaurants overlooking the river.

Richmond is known for its charming high street, beautiful Georgian architecture and relaxed sophistication. It is the sort of place where you can spend hours wandering without any real plan, discovering hidden corners as you go.

A Walk Along the Thames

The real magic begins when you make your way down to the river. The walk from Richmond towards Petersham follows one of the prettiest stretches of the Thames, where rowers glide across the water, narrow boats drift by and weeping willows hang over the riverbank.

The path meanders beside the water through pockets of greenery and open riverside vistas, creating a surprisingly rural feel considering Central London is only a short distance away.

Along the way you'll find:

  • Riverside pubs perfect for a drink with a view

  • Historic houses and gardens

  • Walking and cycling paths

  • River cruises and boat hire during warmer months

  • Plenty of scenic spots to stop and simply watch the Thames unfold

It is one of those walks where the destination is wonderful, but the journey is equally memorable.

Arriving at Petersham Nurseries

Then, quite suddenly, Petersham appears. Tucked away behind garden walls, Petersham Nurseries feels as though you've stumbled upon a secret. What began as a family-run nursery has evolved into one of London's most celebrated lifestyle destinations, yet it retains an effortless sense of authenticity. The first impression is unforgettable. Glasshouses overflowing with plants. Gravel pathways lined with terracotta pots. Climbing vines. Weathered furniture. The scent of herbs, flowers and wood smoke hanging in the air. Every corner feels beautifully imperfect in the most intentional way.

Lunch Beneath the Vines

If there is one piece of advice we would give, it is this: pre-book lunch well in advance.

While many visitors instantly recognise Petersham's famous glasshouse restaurant, there are several beautiful dining experiences throughout the property, each with its own atmosphere. Some guests choose to dine within the iconic greenhouse setting, surrounded by climbing plants, antiques and softly filtered light. Others opt for one of the elegant garden spaces, where tables are tucked amongst flourishing greenery and fragrant vines.

On our visit, we were fortunate enough to sit beneath a canopy of intertwining vines in the garden, and honestly, it felt like discovering a hidden corner of Tuscany in the middle of London.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves above us, birdsong replaced the sounds of the city, and lunch unfolded at a pace that encouraged lingering. It is impossible not to slow down here.

The menu celebrates seasonal ingredients with a distinctly Italian influence, honouring the heritage of the Boglione family while showcasing exceptional British produce. Every dish feels thoughtful yet effortless, allowing the ingredients to take centre stage

It wasn't simply a meal. It was one of those travel experiences where the setting becomes just as memorable as the food itself.

A Family Vision Unlike Anywhere Else

As we settled into lunch, our fabulous maître d' shared the story behind Petersham Nurseries, which only deepened our appreciation for the place.

Founded by Francesco and Gael Boglione, Petersham began as a nursery and garden centre within the grounds of a former Victorian estate. Their vision was never simply to create a restaurant or a retail destination. Instead, they imagined a place where gardening, food, design and slow living could coexist naturally.

Today that philosophy is woven through every corner of the property.

You see it in the weathered terracotta pots overflowing with plants, the carefully sourced antiques, the artisan homewares and the way visitors are encouraged to wander rather than rush from one space to another.

The result is a destination that feels deeply personal. More than a nursery, more than a restaurant, Petersham has become a celebration of beautiful living.

Exploring Petersham Nurseries

After lunch, allow yourself time to get wonderfully lost.

The nursery itself is a treasure trove for gardeners and design lovers alike, filled with rare plants, architectural pieces, containers and seasonal displays that feel as though they have been assembled by an impossibly stylish friend.

The lifestyle shop is equally inspiring, showcasing hand-crafted ceramics, linens, glassware, candles and decorative pieces sourced from artisans around the world. Every display feels editorial rather than retail.

Wander a little further and you'll discover different dining spaces, garden rooms, galleries and hidden corners, each revealing another layer of the Petersham story. There is an effortless beauty throughout, where nature is allowed to spill into every space and nothing feels overly curated, despite every detail being thoughtfully considered.

What we loved most was the sense of escape. Just an hour earlier we had been navigating the energy of Central London. Now we were strolling through gardens, lingering over lunch beneath the vines and forgetting entirely that one of the world's busiest cities sat just beyond the nursery walls.
