When moving through the States of the Yucatan Peninsula the folk artwork and Mexican handicrafts you encounter is a feast for the eyes.

Inspired by ancient Mayan motifs and creation techniques, work is showcased on virtually every corner. Each of the three states – Quintana Roo, Yucatán, and Campeche – are individually renowned for specialty goods. Many artisanal products are created by indigenous people who are fighting to preserve their cultural heritage by sharing their art with the world.

It is in the small villages outside Merida that these rustic bags are handwoven by local Mayan communities, their experienced hands trained in dyeing, weaving and fine sewing. Using the plant fibres from the native henequen plant, the vine and the palm have become the favourites of the artisans to use in the weaving of these baskets and hats. No one fibre is the same, adding to the aesthetic beauty of a nature made design.
