Paper Mache was brought to Mexico by the Spaniards and introduced to the native population by the Jesuits. In the past, Paper Mache crafters in Mexico were called Cartoneros and they worked in the traditional markets selling pinatas which would be used at birthday parties and coming into the Christmas season. The work of the Cartoneros has evolved and paper mache has been used to make all kinds of decorative sculptures now, anything from fruits and vegetables, trays and folk art sculptures including the world famous Alebrijes. Being so versatile it is a technique that has been widely taught in workshops around the country of Mexico.
