Slow Riviera Living at Les Roches Rouges

There are places on the Côte d’Azur that seem determined to be noticed. Les Roches Rouges is not one of them. And perhaps that is precisely its appeal.

Set directly on the Mediterranean just outside Saint-Raphaël, with the rust-red rocks of the Estérel behind it and an almost impossible expanse of blue in front, the hotel has the kind of quiet confidence we love at Esplora. Nothing feels overworked. The architecture is clean and restrained, the palette sun-bleached and natural, allowing the landscape to provide all the drama. And what a landscape it is.

Waking Up to the Mediterranean

Our room was pared back in that distinctly French way that makes simplicity feel luxurious — crisp linen, natural textures, thoughtful details, and beyond the windows, the Mediterranean itself.

We stayed in a Deluxe room which opens directly to the sea, capturing the quiet romance of life on the water. With bespoke furniture, natural materials and a serene, pared‑back design, each space feels both intimate and open. Some rooms feature sculptural touches — an open bathroom or a circular polished‑concrete shower — adding a gentle sense of Riviera character to the simplicity.

This isn’t a hotel about excess. The luxury is in the rhythm: waking to the sound of waves, opening the doors to let the salt air drift in, returning after a long lunch or coastal walk to find everything quietly, beautifully taken care of. The service mirrors this philosophy — warm, intuitive, never intrusive. You fall into Riviera time almost immediately.

Days lived by the water

Life at Les Roches Rouges unfolds around the sea.

Morning swims become long breakfasts. Books are carried to sun loungers with every intention of being read. Lunch drifts into late afternoon. There is always another swim before dinner.

The surrounding coastline is extraordinary. We loved setting out on foot, following the coastal paths as they weave between red porphyry cliffs, umbrella pines and secluded coves. The contrasts are pure Côte d’Azur: rust‑coloured rock, silvery‑green vegetation, and water that shifts from turquoise to deep cobalt.

Take comfortable walking shoes, a swimsuit and very little else. You’ll find countless places along the way that make you want to stop, swim and stay awhile.

Lunch, dinner, repeat

Food is an essential part of the rhythm here, and the hotel’s two restaurants offer two different expressions of the Mediterranean.

Days call for something relaxed: beautiful produce, seafood, vegetables, olive oil, perhaps a chilled glass of rosé — the sort of food that tastes exactly right when eaten outdoors with salty skin and the sea just beyond your table.

Then evening arrives and everything changes slightly.

The light softens, people dress for dinner, and the Riviera takes on that particular glamour it has perfected over generations. Dinner becomes the occasion — more considered, more refined, but still connected to the flavours and ingredients of the south.

It is one of the things we loved most about staying here: you don’t need to leave the hotel to feel as though the day has moved through several different moods.

The other Côte d’Azur

Saint-Raphaël and the surrounding Estérel coast offer a different perspective on the French Riviera.

There is glamour, certainly, but there is also wildness. The landscape feels more elemental than some of the manicured stretches farther east. The dramatic Massif de l’Estérel tumbles towards the Mediterranean, little coves appear between rocky headlands, and coastal roads seem designed for driving with the windows down.

It is a wonderful base for exploring, but equally, this is somewhere that rewards doing very little.

And that may be the greatest luxury of all.

A day in Saint-Tropez

Of course, when Saint-Tropez is within reach, resistance is futile.

We devoted a day to it — a change of pace from the barefoot serenity of Les Roches Rouges and a chance to indulge in another side of Riviera life.

Saint-Tropez is at its best when you allow yourself to wander. Along the harbour past polished yachts and café terraces; through the narrow streets of the old town; into boutiques filled with linen, leather sandals, baskets and pieces that somehow seem entirely necessary when you’re in the South of France.

Lunch should be long. Sunglasses are essential. People-watching is practically a sport.

And then, after the energy and glamour of Saint-Tropez, there is something delicious about returning to Les Roches Rouges — back to the rocks, the sea and the relative stillness.

Shoes come off. Swimsuits go back on. Another aperitif appears.

Why we loved it

Les Roches Rouges understands something that the best Mediterranean hotels have always known: luxury doesn’t necessarily mean more.

Sometimes it is simply space, beauty, wonderful food and the freedom to let the day unfold without a plan.

For women who love design but don’t need formality, who will happily pack a beautiful dress for dinner alongside walking shoes and a swimsuit, and who believe that discovering a destination is as much about what you eat and feel as what you see, this stretch of the Côte d’Azur is particularly seductive.

Come for the extraordinary setting. Walk the coast. Swim from the rocks. Eat exceptionally well. Dress up for dinner. Spend a day in Saint-Tropez.

And leave enough empty space in the itinerary to do absolutely nothing.

Because here, doing nothing can be rather beautiful.
